One man is dead, and another man remains in critical condition after the two were involved in a shooting inside the Albertsons near Thomas and Scottsdale Roads around 5:45 p.m. Tuesday evening, August 6. The men were involved in a verbal interaction that escalated into them both shooting each other. Both men were transported to the hospital with life-threatening gunshot injuries. One of those men was ultimately pronounced dead at the hospital. No bystanders were injured during the exchange of gunfire. Police recovered two separate handguns at the scene. There are no outstanding suspects related to this incident.
Just after 5:45 p.m. Tuesday evening, Scottsdale Police began receiving numerous 911 calls from people inside the store about the shooting. The volume of incoming calls to dispatch reporting multiple shots being fired prompted police to respond as if this incident was an active shooter situation. Officers quickly responded to stabilize the scene, locate any suspects, protect innocents, begin assisting anyone wounded and locate any witnesses. Responding officers thoroughly searched the store, looking for anyone else involved, injured, or still hiding. As more information became available from witnesses, it was learned this was an isolated incident between three individuals. Once the immediate area inside the store was safe, all witnesses from inside were located and safely evacuated from the Albertsons.
Detectives responded to the crime scene and worked through the night to interview witnesses and collect evidence. Detectives are still looking into whether the two shooters knew each other prior to this incident. The third man was located by detectives and interviewed.
This shooting is being investigated as an isolated incident between the three men who were engaged in a verbal interaction that ended in a shooting. There is no ongoing threat to the community or any indication this was a planned or coordinated active shooter incident. This is still an ongoing investigation.
