Canine Safety Day offers expert tips for hiking in the heat

Tail wags and desert trails go hand-in-hand—but are you prepared to keep your dog safe in the Arizona heat? Canine Safety Day, hosted with the McDowell Sonoran Conservancy and Scottsdale Fire Department, focuses on essential pet safety for trail adventurers with four-legged friends.

The event takes place 7:30 to 10:30 a.m. Saturday, April 5, at multiple trailheads: Lost Dog, Gateway, Pima Dynamite, Brown’s Ranch, and Tom’s Thumb (18333 N. Thompson Peak Parkway).

Learn how dogs experience desert temperatures differently than humans, how to recognize signs of heat exhaustion, and what to do in case of a heat-related emergency. With on-site experts ready to help, you’ll gain practical knowledge to make every hike with your pup a safe and enjoyable one.
