Scottsdale is seeking public input on zoning code amendments in the wake of new state laws regarding casitas and multi-family housing. The city is beginning the process of recommending text amendments to the city’s zoning ordinance to comply with new state laws adopted in the last legislative session. The new laws relate to accessory dwelling units (also known as ADUs or “casitas”) and the adaptive reuse of commercial/office/mixed use buildings for multi-family housing.

Residents are invited to learn about these new laws and provide input on proposed changes to city ordinances at one of two meetings:

  • 5 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 19, at Mountain View Community Center, 8625 E. Mountain View Road;
  • 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 20, at the Community Design Studio, 7506 E. Indian School Road.

The same information will be presented at both meetings – choose the time and location most convenient for you.

Mayor David D. Ortega proclaims Hispanic Heritage Month, Sept. 15 - Oct. 15. We celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month to recognize the achievements and contributions of Hispanic American champions who have inspired others to achieve success. Nominations are open for the 2025 Sustainable Scottsdale Awards. The awards recognize innovative individuals, businesses, associations, educational institutions and organizations that demonstrate exceptional sustainability efforts directly enhancing the quality of life in Scottsdale and contributing to an eco-friendly city.

Nominations will be accepted through 5 p.m. Oct. 31. Applicants will complete a brief application form and submit a 500-1,000-word summary telling their innovative program’s story. Award winners will be announced during Earth Week in April 2025. Learn more.

Scottsdale seeks donations for Adopt-A-Senior and Adopt-A-Family programs. Provide a $35 Fry's grocery gift card for Thanksgiving and up to five holiday wish list items, along with a book of stamps, for the Adopt-A-Senior program. Drop off or mail items to Granite Reef Senior Center, 1700 N. Granite Reef Road. Adopt-A-Family program sponsors provide gifts, food, clothing and other essentials to families referred by social service agencies. Applications for assistance and sponsor registration are open.

Attend the Mental Health Matters Conference and learn how you can better support youth. The conference will bring together a diverse group of professionals, experts, advocates, and individuals passionate about mental health. It will feature keynote speeches from local government leaders, breakout sessions, youth and expert panel discussions covering a broad spectrum of resources and programs offered for youth as they relate to mental health, substance use, eating disorders and LGBTQIA. Scottsdale Fire Department, Senior Helpers and HonorHealth are offering a Senior Safety series. To better help senior citizens navigate life as they age, we are offering a program to help keep them safe, healthy and informed. The series will be held from 10-11:30 a.m. the first Tuesday of the month through June, at the Granite Reef Senior Center, Room 5. The Via Linda Senior Center, 10440 E. Have you seen your neighbor lately? Cooler temperatures are on their way, and October is Scottsdale’s G.A.I.N. month! G.A.I.N. (Getting Arizona Involved in Neighborhoods) is our annual event where we encourage all neighborhoods to come together to promote safety, enhance neighborhood communication and celebrate the successes of crime prevention through community involvement. G.A.I.N. will take place Saturday, Oct. 19. Request free block party supplies and have more than 10 different city departments attend your event! Get details and register.

Western Spirit: Scottsdale’s Museum of the West launches fall docent training. Western Spirit: Scottsdale’s Museum of the West is hosting a volunteer docent training program beginning Wednesday, Oct. 2. ADOT advises drivers of upcoming restrictions along Frank Lloyd Wright Boulevard. Frank Lloyd Wright Boulevard will be closed 9 p.m. Friday, Sept. 27-5 a.m. Monday, Sept. 30.

  • Detour: southbound frontage road to eastbound Raintree Drive to northbound frontage road to eastbound Frank Lloyd Wright Boulevard.
  • Detour: northbound frontage road to westbound Bell Road to southbound frontage road to westbound Frank Lloyd Wright Boulevard.

The project is part of the Arizona Department of Transportation's two-year project to add lanes and improve interchanges on Loop 101 between Shea Boulevard and Princess Drive/Pima Road. “Stay in the Loop” by subscribing to project updates on ADOT's website.

Job of the Week: Fire Department Technology Supervisor. The position provides technical supervisory services and mid to high-level technical software support to improve and enhance computer systems.
