Most city offices and facilities will be closed Wednesday, June 19, for Juneteenth. Trash and recycling collection is not affected. Place your containers in their usual spot by 5 a.m. the morning of collection or the night before.  

Scottsdale mourns the passing of Police Detective Ryan So. So passed away Thursday, June 13, after sustaining duty-related injuries.

So served the city for nine years, and he was a Navy veteran. He is survived by his wife and three children. Memorial service details are pending.

Scottsdale Airport earned a Federal Aviation Administration Western-Pacific Region Outstanding Airport Award. The award recognizes airports that excel in various aspects of airport management and development. Scottsdale was lauded for its dedication to operational excellence and innovation, safety and community engagement in completing substantial improvement and construction projects.

  • Scottsdale Stories & Sweets: Part Two - Stories Rediscovered: In 1962, a Scottsdale deputy marshal was involved in a life-threatening motorcycle collision. How did his survival change the future of the city? It would require Scottsdale to transform from a small town to a growing city with amenities and resources. 7-8 p.m. Tuesday, June 18, Community Design Studio, 7506 E. Indian School Road.   • barre3 Pop Up Fitness: Join barre 3 owner Nicole Putnam for a full body balanced workout that combines strength, cardio and mindfulness. 6:30-7:15 p.m. Thursdays, June 20 and 27 and 7-7:45 a.m. Saturdays, June 22 and 29, Marshall Gardens (just north of the East Bowl), Civic Center, 3939 N. Enjoy the summer solstice at Solstice Park, Thursday. The city dedicated the community's smallest park, Solstice Park, in 2021. Famed architect Paolo Soleri designed the park, which includes the Soleri Bridge and Plaza and encompasses a pedestrian passage, solar calendar and gathering spot along the Scottsdale Waterfront.

The bridge, anchored by two iconic 64-foot pylons, is situated at a true north axis and designed to mark solar events produced by the sun’s shadow. The 6-inch gap between both sets of pylons allows the sun to create a shaft of light as the earth moves. The length of this shaft of light varies depending upon the time of year.

At each summer solstice, when the sun is highest in the sky, no shadow is cast from the pylons. The summer solstice is the longest day of the year and marks the official beginning of summer in the northern hemisphere. The solstice will arrive at 1:50 p.m. Arizona time, Thursday, June 20. There’s no better place to celebrate than Solstice Park – just remember to wear a hat and sunscreen and bring lots of water! Learn more about the park and view photos.

Vista del Camino offers free Saturday Summer Camp. Activities include arts and crafts, games, food and more. The program runs noon-4 p.m. through July 27, for anyone 6 years and older. Registration is required.

Children's Learning and Play Festival promises a day of fun and learning. This free event runs 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, June 29, at WestWorld. It’s the perfect outing for families with kids of all ages and features activities to educate, entertain and inspire. Enjoy authors, live music, captivating performances, thrilling rides and hands-on STEAM activities. Don’t miss the wildlife exhibits where children can get up close and personal with animals, and interactive booths that focus on health, wellness and active play.

PROGRAMS AND SERVICES 

City provides appliance collection for residential customers. Crews will haul away major appliance such as washers, dryers, dishwasher, hot water heaters and freezers the last Thursday of the month. Get specific requirements and schedule a pickup. 

Investing in Our Scottsdale: Work continues on phase two of the Raintree Drive Extension project. This phase runs from the Thunderbird Road alignment at 73rd Street to the roundabout at 76th Place and Redfield Road. In addition to adding a second eastbound lane, the project will provide a direct connection between the Loop 101 Pima Freeway and Scottsdale Road, simplify the route from Hayden to Scottsdale roads, and relieve traffic congestion along Frank Lloyd Wright Boulevard.

The recently completed phase one added a roundabout at the 76th Place and Redfield Road and Hayden and Raintree roads intersections.  

The third and final phase includes adding a roundabout at the Raintree Drive and Northsight Boulevard intersection, which is slated to take place in 2026. Get project details.

Use Scottsdale transit to find south Scottsdale shopping. Last month’s closure of the Fry’s grocery store at Miller and Indian School roads has left some transit riders looking for a new place to grocery shop. Scottsdale’s Trolley and Valley Metro regional transit systems offer service to several grocery stores in southern Scottsdale. Trolleys offer free service with a 20-minute ride frequency and operate 6 a.m.-7:30 p.m. Monday–Friday. Get routes and more information:

Help prioritize federally funded community assistance programs. Share your feedback on Scottsdale’s Consolidated Plan at a meeting from 6:30-8 p.m. Wednesday, June 26, at Civic Center Library, 3839 N. Drinkwater Road. The plan plays an important role in setting housing and community development priorities that improve the quality of life for low- to moderate-income families and assists in neighborhood stabilization. ADOT advises drivers to plan for the following restrictions as part of the Loop 101 (Pima Freeway) Improvements. But first, we have some good news! The northbound Shea Boulevard on ramp is open. ADOT would like to thank you for your patience during this closure which allowed crews to construct drainage improvements and realign and reconstruct the ramp.

  • The southbound Pima Road/eastbound Princess Drive on ramp will be closed at the Loop 101 for 60 days beginning Tuesday, June 18. Drivers can access the southbound Loop 101 by taking the southbound frontage road to the Frank Lloyd Wright on ramp.  Southbound drivers can use the north- and westbound freeway on ramp to make a U-turn at Hayden Road, then head south. 

  • Southbound Pima Road left-turn lanes will be restricted to one lane at the Loop 101 through July 3.

  • East- and westbound Loop 101 will be closed between Tatum Boulevard and 64th Street from 9 p.m.-5 a.m. Monday, June 17-Wednesday, June 19. The westbound Loop 101 on ramps at Hayden and Scottsdale roads will be closed.

Reminders:

  • The northbound Loop 101 off ramp at Cactus Road continues to be closed through June 28. 

  • The northbound Loop 101 off ramp at Frank Lloyd Wright Boulevard is closed through the end of July.
