Nominate a veteran for the Scottsdale Salutes program. In November, the city will once again pay tribute to the brave men and women who have served and continue to serve in the United States Armed Forces. As part of its annual Scottsdale Salutes program, light pole banners featuring local veterans and military service members will be displayed in Old Town for two weeks in November.

All veterans, active-duty service members, and members of the National Guard and reserves who live in Scottsdale or have substantial ties to the community are eligible for nomination. Submit nominations by Friday, Sept. 27. Those selected will be honored at a special community reception in November.

The Scottsdale Salutes recognition program was initiated by the Scottsdale Veterans Advisory Commission, a group of seven residents appointed by the City Council to advise on veterans’ issues and raise awareness of veterans’ contributions within the community.

Mayor’s “We the People” Constitution Day Contest showcases American pride; offers prizes and recognition for winning entries. Mayor David D. Ortega is hosting a Constitution Day Contest to commemorate the Sept. 17, 1797, signing of the U. S. Constitution. Compose an essay; create a piece of art in any medium; write, perform and record an original song or act; or produce a podcast. Prizes will be awarded in different categories for various age groups. Investing in Our Scottsdale -- Chaparral Road is open; multiuse path closures continue. Work began in May on a new pedestrian underpass along the Indian Bend multiuse path under Chaparral Road. Some lane closures will be needed as we finish the project.

The path on the east side of Hayden Road just before Chaparral Road is closed in both directions. The Hayden Road underpass south of Chaparral Road and approximately 300 feet of the loop path around Chaparral Lake also are closed. Use the multiuse path on the west side of Hayden Road between Camelback and Jackrabbit roads. When completed in early 2025, the project will increase safety and allow more green light time for vehicles. Watch this video update.

The September Civil War Roundtable features Robert D. Jenkins Sr.’s “The Cassville Affairs and the Failed Confederate Strategy in the Atlanta Campaign.” The lecture offers up a new look at this pivotal moment in the decisive struggle for northern Georgia in 1864. Civil War historians have remained baffled over the Cassville controversies for the past 150 plus years. The Scottsdale Civil War Roundtable meets Tuesday, Sept. 17, at Scottsdale Civic Center Library, 3839 N. Drinkwater Blvd. The lecture starts at 6 p.m.; doors open at 5 p.m. for book sales and a speaker meet and greet.

Club SAR has extended its Saturday hours to 8 a.m.-4 p.m. Club SAR is a multi-sport facility which provides many options for beginners, fitness enthusiasts and everyone in between to accomplish their physical fitness goals. Protect your identity! Bring your personal and/or commercial documents to the “Shred It” events, September-May. The next event runs 7-10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 14, at the Scottsdale Police Department District 1, 7601 E. McKellips Road. Note, this is a new location. Cost is $5 per bag or box.

The Scottsdale Police Department commemorates the 12th annual National Forensic Science Week, Sept 15-21. Across the nation, agencies and organizations honor the dedication and hard work of those in forensic science. Quality forensic science is a critical element of intelligence-led policing that can exonerate the innocent, identify perpetrators, uncover crime trends, solve crimes, and enhance public safety. The Scottsdale Police Department offers a variety of services to assist with criminal investigations.

The city’s Forensic Services Division includes two sections and seven units. The Forensic Laboratory Section analyzes evidence for criminal investigations, and forensic scientists work in the Blood Alcohol, Controlled Substances, Latent Print and ID, and Forensic Biology disciplines. The Forensic Operations Section includes the Crime Scene, Digital Forensics, and Property and Evidence units. All dedicated units of the Forensic Services Division collaborate to identify, collect, and analyze evidence to provide scientific answers to the criminal justice system and provide exceptional customer service to help ensure a safe Scottsdale. ADOT advises drivers to plan for overnight closures as part of the Loop 101 Pima Freeway improvements. Princess Drive/Pima Road will be closed at Loop 101 nightly from 9 p.m.-5 a.m.:

  • Wednesday, Sept. 11-Friday, Sept. 13
  • Sunday, Sept. 15-Friday, Sept. 20
  • Sunday, Sept. 22-Friday, Sept. 27

In addition, starting today, Frank Lloyd Wright Boulevard will be reduced to two through lanes at Loop 101 until fall 2025. There also will be east- and westbound single lane closures on Frank Lloyd Wright Boulevard at Loop 101 through noon Saturday, Sept. 14.

The project is part of the Arizona Department of Transportation's two-year project to add lanes and improve interchanges on Loop 101 between Shea Boulevard and Princess Drive/Pima Road. “Stay in the Loop” by subscribing to project updates on ADOT's website.
