This weekend, Scottsdale may see periods of intense rain, gusty winds, and thunderstorms, creating potential hazards. Residents are encouraged to stay alert to changing weather conditions, review their flood preparedness plans and take precautions now to protect themselves and their property.

Sandbag Availability and Flood Protection Resources

Scottsdale offers sand and empty bags as a courtesy service for residents who use sandbags to help shield their homes from flooding during severe weather; however, supplies can run low quickly during major storms, and availability can't be guaranteed for everyone.

Sand and bags are available on a first-come, first-served basis at the Scottsdale Water Campus, located near 88th Street and Union Hills Drive and Scottsdale Police Department District 1, 7601 E. McKellips Road. The bags are free, but residents must bring their own shovel and fill the bags themselves.

Besides sandbags, residents can use flood diversion tubes as an additional method to keep water out of their homes. These easy-to-handle barriers are lightweight until filled and can be quickly set up using a regular garden hose, providing a reliable line of defense against floodwaters.

Other options include portable flood fencing and water-absorbing cushions. Homeowners in areas prone to seasonal flooding are encouraged to explore these alternatives at local hardware stores or through online suppliers.

Tips to Stay Prepared

Residents can act now to ensure they are prepared for upcoming storm conditions:

  • Emergency supplies: Keep flashlights, extra batteries, and bottled water on hand. For a full list of recommended items, visit ready.gov/kit.
  • Family communication: Establish a plan with family members so everyone knows how to connect during an emergency. Visit ready.gov/make-a-plan for planning tools and guidance.
  • Follow Scottsdale on Facebook, Instagram and X (formerly Twitter) for the latest information on weather impacts throughout the city.

Use Caution When Outdoors

Before heading out to Scottsdale’s parks, preserves, or recreation areas, check ahead for closures that may still be in effect due to wet conditions. Visit ScottsdaleAZ.gov for the most current updates on facilities and trail access.

Remember to keep safety a priority, plan ahead, and always treat fast-moving water with caution.
