Share your feedback on the 2024 draft McDowell Sonoran Preserve Ecological Resource Plan. The preserve consists of over 30,000 acres of Sonoran Desert that is managed to protect habitat for native plants and wildlife, safeguard archaeological and historic resources and provide appropriate public access for education and recreation purposes.

The plan builds upon the 2016 ERP – and includes recommendations and guidance for scientific studies to evaluate and monitor ecological resources for the purpose of promoting the long-term health of the preserve. The draft was prepared with input from key stakeholders including the Arizona Game and Fish Department, the city of Scottsdale McDowell Sonoran Preserve Commission and the McDowell Sonoran Conservancy.

The McDowell Sonoran Preserve is a dynamic ecosystem, and the 2024 ERP provides a framework for measuring and understanding an ever-changing landscape. Public feedback is crucial and will help shape the long-term management and protection of McDowell Sonoran Preserve. Review the draft document and provide input via our online webform.

Programs and Services

The Scottsdale Salutes program honors local veterans. In November, the city will once again pay tribute to the brave men and women who have served and continue to serve in the United States Armed Forces.

As part of the annual Scottsdale Salutes program, light pole banners featuring local veterans and military service members will be displayed in Old Town for two weeks in November.

All veterans, active-duty service members, and members of the National Guard and reserves who live in Scottsdale or have substantial ties to the community are eligible for nomination. This year, program eligibility has been expanded to include individuals whose connection to the Scottsdale community is demonstrated by working in Scottsdale for at least five years.

Nominate service members until Friday, Sept. 27. Those selected will be honored at a special community reception in November.

The Scottsdale Salutes recognition program was initiated by the Scottsdale Veterans Advisory Commission, a group of seven residents appointed by the City Council to advise on veterans’ issues and raise awareness of veterans’ contributions within the community.

Seniors 63-85 are needed for Forever Fit, a six-week research study to evaluate the benefits of exercise and nutrition for healthy aging. This program aims to gain valuable knowledge about personal fitness levels and the healthfulness of participants' diets. It’s a collaboration among Scottsdale senior centers, Scottsdale Community College, Honor Health and Blue Zones.

The study runs Sept. 30-Dec. 16. Qualified participants will receive an initial fitness assessment, a six-week exercise program, a nutrition assessment and a follow-up fitness assessment at no cost. Interested participants can call 480-312-1718 for registration information.

Get schooled at September Neighborhood College classes. This program is a fantastic opportunity for residents to get engaged and informed about various aspects of our community. With four tracks available – HOA/Condo, Good Neighbor, Stories of Scottsdale History and Scottsdale 360 – there's something for everyone.

The program equips residents with the knowledge, resources and tools needed to become effective neighborhood leaders, which is crucial for fostering a strong sense of community and collaboration. Additionally, entertaining history classes add fun to the learning experience, making it both informative and enjoyable. Get dates, times, locations, class descriptions and registration information.
