Scottsdale’s General Election: On Election Day, Tuesday, Nov. 5, all voting locations throughout Maricopa County will be open from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. You can vote at any location, request a replacement ballot, or drop off your voted early ballot. Scottsdale mourns visionary leader Dick Bowers. The city of Scottsdale and Arizona’s public service sector are mourning the loss of Richard A. “Dick” Bowers, a public service veteran whose career spanned more than 45 years. Bowers passed away Oct. 30.

For nearly two decades, Bowers played a pivotal role in shaping Scottsdale’s success. Serving first as Deputy City Manager from 1981 to 1991 and then as City Manager from 1991 to 2000, Bowers was instrumental in guiding the city’s growth.

A funeral Mass is scheduled for 10 a.m. Nov. 21, at St. Theresa Parish, 5045 E. Thomas Road, Phoenix, followed by a graveside service at St. Francis Catholic Cemetery, 2033 N. 48th St., Phoenix. An afternoon reception will be held at the Herberger Theater Center, 222 E. Monroe St., Phoenix.

Scottsdale Salutes – More than 40 local veterans and service members are being honored in November. Travelers along Drinkwater Boulevard in Old Town Scottsdale will see tributes to the community's veterans and military service members in the form of large streetlight banners as the Scottsdale Salutes program continues for its third year.

The Scottsdale Salutes program was initiated by the Veterans Advisory Commission as part of their charge to elevate awareness and appreciation for veterans in the community.

The Scottsdale Police Department has been awarded two grants from the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety to support traffic safety initiatives. A $60,000 Speed Awareness Grant will fund educational programs highlighting the dangers of excessive speed and reckless driving. Additionally, a $55,000 Pedestrian and Bicycle Safety Grant will support safety and enforcement efforts citywide, including Scottsdale’s entertainment district.

With serious traffic incidents remaining a key concern, these grants will enhance the department's efforts to promote safer streets for all.

PROGRAMS AND SERVICES

Murder in the first degree: two stories that shocked Scottsdale. Learn about two cases where the suspect planned and prepared for the murder of their victim – which made them first-degree murder cases. The stories include all the nuance and historical perspective that you’ve come to expect! The first happened in the 1960s and led to repercussions for all the convicted murderers in Arizona to follow. The second happened in 2010 and was overshadowed by another case in another jurisdiction.

Scottsdale’s Neighborhood Advisory Commission wants to showcase those who embody the “Spirit of Scottsdale.” This yearly award program recognizes residents and organizations/businesses that help to strengthen and build Scottsdale’s community through their commitment to and involvement in neighborhoods. Do not wait – nominations will only be accepted through Dec. 31.

Grants available to spruce up neighborhoods. The Neighborhood Enhancement Grant Program can help residents maintain and revitalize Scottsdale’s mature neighborhoods. Eligible projects include landscape maintenance or enhancement, perimeter wall maintenance, limited alley improvements, and neighborhood signage. Scottsdale’s Neighborhood Advisory Commission will consider each application proposal and request, subject to program criteria and requirements. >Learn more and submit an application.

The position assists with coordinating the day-to-day scheduling and assigning of work of Solid Waste Program Representatives and provides technical advice to lower-level staff.
